Report on Down by the Riverside event, Saturday May 17th, 2003

by Christy Caballero and Lori Baker

A volunteer crew 47 strong took part in SOLV's Down by the Riverside: Enhancement and Appreciation Day, at Dibblee Point Beach in Rainier, Oregon on Saturday.  Volunteers combined a walk on the beach with some old fashioned hard work, as they leisurely combed the beach, roads and trails throughout the 110 acre area picking up litter along the way.  A total of four yards of trash, which weighted in at approximately 700 lbs., was collected, along with 14 tires.

Craig Smith of BC Excavation volunteered his time and equipment to grade and improve the public access roads at the site.  Friends of Dibblee Point (FDP) recognized BC Excavation's contributions to the site during the community appreciation BBQ and awards that concluded the day.

A total of 15 individuals, businesses and agencies received appreciation awards for significant contributions towards the enhancement of Dibblee Point from FDP including:

Todd Dugdale, Columbia County Land Development Services

Middle School Class of 2002-2003,Columbia County Education Campus (CCEC)

Mark Ensminger, USG

John Grahms, Waste Management

"It really makes me happy that Dibblee Point is clean today because of the combined efforts of so many people.  Every person that visits Dibblee Point and leaves it better than they found it, has made a difference," said Lori Baker of Friends of Dibblee Point.

During the BBQ, volunteers enjoyed sunshine and good food, including a freshly caught steelhead.  A highlight of the day was when 4-yr-old Jenny Bendio reeled in a 12-lb steelhead with a little help from her Dad off Dibblee Beach.  The Bendio family donated the catch to the BBQ festivities.  Jenny's brother and FDP volunteer, Nathan Bendio, prepared the fish.

This is SOLV’s eighth annual Down by the Riverside event, with over 300 sites participating in enhancement projects throughout the state of Oregon.  Other Columbia County locations that participated in the event were Scappoose Bay, Pixie Park and Clatskanie City Park.

The third FDP beach cleanup at Dibblee Point again went well.

A same group of dedicated folks (8) showed up to again show our commitment to keeping Dibblee Point clean. We removed 4 yards of trash and dumped sheetrock, 2 couches and one recliner. Considerably less than our first Fall cleanup one year ago! Special thanks to Waste Management of Columbia County for the 1000 pound waiver towards our dump fee!

In addition we installed 10 bird boxes that have been sponsored by members of the community. These sponsorships will help pay to keep the trash off the beach throughout the Fall and Winter. Thanks to all who have supported our efforts. We will continue to sell sponsorships and install bird boxes at Dibblee Point throughout the year.

Dibblee Point Clean up 5-18-02

Well the Spring Cleanup went just super!

Friends of Dibblee Point hosted our 2nd cleanup of the beach, participating in SOLV'S 7th annual "Down by the Riverside - Enhancement, Cleanup and Appreciation Day".

35 community volunteers participated in the Dibblee Cleanup, removing approx 1860 lbs of trash, 3 cubic yards of recyclable scrap metal, 20 tires and 6 bags of cans and bottles.  In addition 25 Cottonwood trees were freed from English Ivy.  Folks enjoyed the area afterwards with a riverside picnic.  Thanks to those who contributed to the cost of the port-a-potty; FDP has rented a unit through August for the publics use at the site.

Statewide about 6000 community volunteers turned out to remove 65 tons of non-native plants and 50 tons of trash at nearly 200 sites throughout Oregon.  Big thanks to SOLV for working so hard to keep special places clean!

35 individuals and several agencies, business and governments sponsored this event locally and made it possible.

The day was a success thanks to the folks who came and did the work.  Many of the volunteers were from a team of employees from PGE.   Special thanks goes to Tina Steeprow, a Rainier resident and employee of PGE who put the volunteer team together.  In addition to providing a crew, PGE donated donuts and door prizes to make this spring event extra fun.  Thanks PGE and Tina!
